Weather and Climate

Cape Verde is sunny all year round. Temperatures during the day really fall below 20°C (68°F) and seldom rise above 30°C (86°F).

November to early July is the dry season, and mid July to October is the rainy one. The island’s history of drought however shows that the rains don’t always come as expected.

Hiking

The mountainous islands of Santiago, Sao Nicolau and Fogo, are at their most beautiful after the rains so September to December would be the ideal time to go.

Diving

The sea temperatures remained fairly constant around the islands of Cape Verdi-around 21°C (72°F) in February and March, up to 25°C (80°F) in September and October. We recommend June to September for diving holidays in the Cape Verde Islands.

Surfing

King said he is becoming more and more popular as a surfing destination. January and February are the best months to travel. The waves at Ponta Preta on the island of Sal will be high.

Windsurfing and kite surfing

These are key exports on the islands of Sal, Boavista and Sao Vicente, and the winds have been known to gust up to 30 knots in Mindelo Bay. The average wind speed of 16 knots during January to June is still ideal.

Birdwatching

March and April is the start of the breeding season for seabirds. October and November after the rains, when the vegetation should be at its best, is when to visit for the land birds breeding season.

Turtles

For a real treat, fly to Boavista from late May to September and on Ervatoa beach you may be able to see some loggerhead turtles coming ashore.
